Each year the foundation raises over $1,000,000!

Learning that your newborn baby girl has Pompe Disease was one of the most frightening days of Caitlin’s life. However, with the help of her husband, Jeff, family and friends, she was able to utilize her love of healthcare and turn that uncertainty into a drive to help other families affected by Pompe Disease. Over time, Lauren and Macie have developed a special bond and Macie has become a constant source of her joy.

Lauren admires the Harris family and Macie’s Mission for being a family-run organization committed to helping others, even when they could understandably focus solely on Macie’s diagnosis with Pompe Disease. Julie Duenges

Meet Julie Duenges

Julie is originally from Seaford, NY and attended Kellenberg Memorial High School. She attended Adelphi University for her undergraduate degree in 2001, received her master’s degree from Columbia University, Teacher’s College in 2003 and was granted Board Certification as Behavioral Analyst in 2011. In 2006, Julie married fellow Seaford native Matthew Duenges and they now live in Massapequa with their 3 daughters— Rylie, Bryelle & Sloane. For the past 23 years, Julie has served as a Special Education Teacher in the Herricks School District. She was also the Director of Camper Services/REACH program for Hofstra University’s Summer Camps from 2007-2021 whereas she designed and directed programs to include children with special needs into Hofstra Summer Camps programs. Julie is a Senior Behavior Analyst/Parent Coach for various agencies across Long Island servicing children/young adults with autism spectrum disorders and their families.

In 2012 while pregnant with their middle daughter Bryelle, due to advances in required prenatal screening Julie and Matt were both identified as genetic carriers for Pompe Disease. Later that year at age 3, Rylie was diagnosed with Late Onset Pompe Disease. Overwhelmed with this new diagnosis and unsure where to turn, Matt and Julie began to read/research everything available about Pompe Disease- which was extremely limited and frightening for a young family. In June 2015, Sloane was diagnosed at birth with Late Onset Pompe Disease. With little direction and a lot of parental ambition, Rylie & Sloane were finally seen and then monitored by Dr. Martin Bialer through Northwell Hospital until his retirement in 2021 due to COVID. Julie & Matt then brought the girls to no fewer than 10 practitioners with no success until finally in late 2023 were introduced to Dr. Ganesh and her team at Mount Sinai who has been a lifeline for the family as they continue to navigate through the world of rare genetic diseases.

In January 2023, through a random social media post by mutual friend, Julie and Matt were introduced to fellow Pompe parents, Jeff and Caitlin Harris and Macie’s Mission. Finding a supporting and guiding community like Macie’s Mission has been crucial in locating care for Rylie and Sloane and establishing a support system for Matt and Julie. Dr. Ganesh’s team at Mount Sinai was one of the many recommendations found through networking within the Macie’s Mission family. The entire Duenges family continues to be forever grateful to Macie’s Mission for their tireless efforts to raise awareness and funds to find a cure and support for families.
